How do we transform willow wood into unique handmade dreamcatchers?

by Monica soriano 05 Nov 2025 0 Comments

People have been asking us for a long time:

“How do you create such intricate dreamcatcher structures using willow wood — a material that isn’t easy to work with?”

So today, we want to share our process.

🌿 Why willow wood?

All of our dreamcatchers are made with willow wood because according to the original Native American legend, the Great Spirit instructed the people to build dreamcatchers using willow. Willow was considered sacred for its qualities:

  • flexibility

  • resilience

  • strength

  • the ability to connect heaven and earth

Its long branches “touch the ground,” symbolizing divine energy descending to the Earth.

In the beginning, I had a willow tree right in front of my house. The city trimmed its branches so they wouldn’t interfere with overhead cables, and instead of letting those branches go to waste, I took them all home.
It felt like life had placed the perfect material in front of me.

What began as simple curiosity became a creative journey —
and eventually, a reconnection with my own soul.

🌀 Creating dreamcatchers became a moving meditation

For me, creating dreamcatchers is like drawing a mandala:

It is meditation through movement.

The process starts with the structure, which becomes the foundation for the weaving — the mandala inside.

The dreamcatcher legend says that the frame should be round.
But… my imagination had other plans.

What started as a simple loop soon turned into intricate structures with:

  • curves

  • waves

  • open spaces

Those spaces asked to be filled with the mysterious web.

There were no rules.
No fixed method.
Only intuition.

✨ The sacred web adapts to any shape

The most surprising thing happened when I began weaving inside irregular shapes:

The web — which holds the divine proportion — didn’t lose its harmony, even inside an unconventional structure.

The spirals kept their balance.
The geometry stayed perfect.
The web adapted to the willow — not the other way around.

The webs began to interact, forming a silent dialogue between structure and weaving.

There was completion, connection, and meaning.

🌎 Nature as a collaborator

Every piece carries healing energy, completed by elements gifted by nature:

  • white river quartz polished naturally by water over who knows how many years

  • stones or shells perforated naturally by the sea, as if carved by a cosmic craftsman

Nature became part of the creation.
The dreamcatcher became a bridge.

I realized I wasn't designing alone —
I was co-creating with the Earth.

🪶 So… how do we do it?

There is no method, no exact steps.
The process is entirely intuitive.

  1. I take a willow branch.

  2. I bend it.

  3. I listen.

  4. I follow.

  5. I dream.

Sometimes it takes days before I feel the structure is complete.
I let it dry.
Then another journey begins — the weaving.

But that part belongs to another chapter.
